Sasser House, 1997 Sasser House

Currently under construction this home is both a mixture of modern and traditional elements. It has a complex hip roof and simple yet classic articulation. This house is very open with volume ceilings in almost every room. It overlooks a country hillside and was designed to take advantage of the lots spectacular views. Having almost 4000 square feet of living space an attached three car garage, a screened porch and a massive 1500 square foot deck off the rear this house offers the best in modern living.

A new face was in order for this home. This was a ranch style house with one continuous low roof line. Facing a golf course, the land value had significantly increased since it was built in the late 1950's, so overbuilding the area wasn't a real concern. The owners wanted to increase the openness of the interior, create a new entry and living area for entertainment and also add a new master bedroom complete with a modern updated bathroom.

The solution was to not try to hide the low horizontal form of the house but to balance it, by taking a lesson from prairie style architecture. First by adding a focal point at the entry area, which is the only roof that was lifted above the original fascia line. Then adding the new living room to the left and the new master bedroom to the right. Both with hip roofs that are perpendicular to the existing roof.

The owners wanted a new home but still wanted old world charm. The house was designed to fit into a 100' width lot with a side entry garage and over 3800 square feet of living area. With simple additive massing the chopped up roof was more easily done, without complicating the structural system.

This house was built when the notorious stucco scare was in the media everywhere, so even though the owners wanted a stucco look they were not willing to use the synthetic stucco products at the time. The solution was to use 8 x 4 x 16 split face concrete blocks with rough flush mortar joints, then to paint the blocks with a masonry paint.
